MLO 5 allows the student to develop a reasonable understanding of the ways of thinking (ideas, beliefs, attitudes, values, philosophies), the behavioral practices (patterns of social interactions) and the tangible/intangible cultural products (for example, art, history, literature, music) of the society or major cultures reflected by the language which you have chosen to study.
Reflective Narrative
Pathway 2: Conducting a one hour in-depth interview with a speaker of Spanish, eliciting, in a conversational manner, comments of a biographical nature, cultural and social observations and anecdotal reflections.
For this particular project, I decided to conduct an interview reflecting the work and opinions of field workers in the community of Watsonville, CA, where I have lived for the past eighteen years. Many people believe that living in a rural town has a negative impact in the lives of people, nevertheless, I learned that living in a rural town brings people together in difficult times and makes people understand each others cultures and traditions. Deciding what topic to focus on and what particular group of people I should conduct my interview on was a bit challenging, but reflecting on the difficult times this country is suffering, I had the need to reflect on those voices that seem to be forgotten or hardly even mentioned. Farm labor in the community of Watsonville is an important part to the migrant community and often times, their hard work is not recognized as much as it should be. As a former farm worker, I can personally say that working from sunrise to sunset, under very poor conditions, is something that is not often recognized and sometimes not thought about. Therefore, this project is dedicated to the hardworking people of Watsonville, especially to my family members who have sacrificed leaving their homeland in order to provide for their families, you are not forgotten.
