WELCOME! ¡Bienvenidos!
Personal Statement
Growing up in two different countries not only meant that I had to assimilate and acculturate but also, it meant that I had to learn two different languages. Spanish is my native language and the language that I communicate in the most in my community. I thought that by having to live in a foreign country, I would never speak Spanish again, but I was wrong. I was fortunate enough to live in a community were the majority of its residents are of Mexicans decent and speak Spanish.
Since at a young age, I knew that I wanted to teach, but did not know what route to take. Therefore, when I transferred to CSUMB from community college, I decided that I would major in Spanish and contribute back to my community by becoming an educator. Through the Spanish major, I was able to connect back to my Mexican roots, due to my emphasis in literature and culture, and where I learned more about my own identity as a Chicano in the U.S.
Nevertheless, despite the difficulties and obstacles that prevented me of achieving a superior education, I was able to overcome them and accomplish my educational goals. Through teaching, not only do I want to be a role model for students. but also to promote education as one of the most important tools to achieve one's dreams.
My journey at CSUMB has been incredible, not only will I obtain a degree in Spanish, but also I was able to grow academically into a professional student and that I owe to the faculty members . Words cannot express how grateful I am to my professors, because without their support and guidance, I would not have been able to accomplish my educational goal. Although I will be graduating in the spring of 2017, my educational dreams do not stop there. In the future, I want to continue with a post-graduate degree in Mexican-American studies and be able to educate others on the history and the presence of Mexicans in this country.
